Popham is one of those beaches that feels huge the second you step onto it. Long, wide, open—just a big stretch of sand with nothing trying too hard. The water’s cold, the breeze always feels clean, and on a quiet day it’s one of the easiest places in Maine to just exist without thinking too much.
When the tide drops, the whole beach changes. Channels appear, big flat stretches open up, and suddenly you can walk all the way out to Fox Island— which is honestly the best part of the entire place. It’s only accessible at low tide, and you definitely have to pay attention to the tide chart or you’ll end up stranded with a fast-moving wall of water between you and the mainland. But if you hit it at the right time, the walk out is incredible. Quiet, open, a little surreal.
After that, it’s all about wandering. Beachcombing there is actually really good—once I found several sand dollars scattered in the wet sand like someone set them out on purpose. You never know what’s going to wash up after the tide pulls back, but that’s part of the fun.
